MLC 2006 Compliance Details
The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 is often called the "seafarers' bill of rights". Below is how we apply the key regulations in our recruitment and placement work.
Recruitment and Placement
Seafarers have access to an efficient and well-regulated recruitment and placement system. We never charge seafarers any fee or other charge for recruitment or placement, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part. In line with MLC 2006, Standard A1.4, paragraph 5(b), the only costs a seafarer may bear are for obtaining their own national statutory medical certificate, national seafarer's book (CDC) and passport or similar personal travel document. Visa costs are borne by the shipowner. If anyone asks you for money in our name, report it immediately to grievance@skengineering-maritime.com.
Seafarer Employment Agreements
All seafarers are provided with a fair employment agreement that is understandable and enforceable, with clear terms and conditions.
Wages
Seafarers are paid in full, at least monthly, as set out in their Seafarer Employment Agreement and any applicable collective bargaining agreement, with allotments sent to the accounts they nominate.
Entitlement to Leave
We place seafarers only under SEAs that provide at least 2.5 calendar days of paid annual leave per month of employment.
Repatriation
Seafarers have the right to be repatriated at no cost to themselves under the circumstances specified in the Convention.
Medical Care
We place seafarers only with shipowners who provide on-board medical care and shore-side treatment as MLC requires, and we follow up on medical cases.
Health and Safety
We place seafarers only on vessels operated under a safety management system, and we brief crew on safety before joining.
Complaint Procedures
Seafarers can raise complaints with us at any time through our Grievance Procedure. On board, they can use the vessel's complaint procedure. Ashore, they can complain to the port state or their national authority.
